Create a unique and personal quilt, using fabric you print yourself.  

Gelli Plate Printing is a fun and easy way to generate special fabric, which is specific to you.  No art skills required – it is a process that anyone can manage – all you need to the willingness to give it a go.  Over the four days, you will receive lots of ideas and advice on making your own quilt, see lots of samples and learn new techniques.  You will go away with an individual quilt, totally unlike anyone else’s.  

Day One

Using a gelli plate, acrylic paint and fabric, we will print lots of fabric, learning about colour mixing.  Different items will be used to make marks on the fabric, such as leaves, feathers, cotton reels and items from your household recycling.  You will quickly create a stash of distinctive fabric, some of which will be too precious to cut up!

Day Two

Taking the fabric you have printed, particularly the pieces you don’t think are successful, we will cut them up and reorder to create a quilt top.  There will be the opportunity to print additional fabric if you find you have gaps.

Days Three and Four

Once your quilt top is layered up, we will quilt it simply to give the varied fabrics cohesion and then add additional motifs on top in bias tape or by hand stitch using thick, visible threads.  If there is time, we will also look at creating some small pieces to frame made from the prints you like, adding stitched detail.

Price

The course costs £360. This is includes acrylic paint and use of the gelli plates, rollers and various things to make prints.  You will need to bring (or buy) fabric and things to use for printing such as leaves, feathers, lace, etc.  A full requirements list will be provided. 

Complementary lunch, tea and coffee and a generous supply of biscuits will be available.   Please let me know of any specific dietary requirements.

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in gelli plate printing, who wants to gain a thorough understanding of the process.  It is also suitable for artists and quilters who are looking for an additional way to create exciting fabrics.   Complete beginners welcome.
