This kit contains 60g of Ferric Ammonium Citrate (brown) and 30g Potassium Ferricyanide, which when mixed with water make 500ml of cyanotype solution, along with a 12 page booklet with video links on cyanotype printing and a foam brush.
These chemicals, when mixed, become light sensitive and they can be painted onto fabric or paper. It starts off mustard brown and when exposed to the sun turns dark blue, due to UV light. The chemicals are then washed out and areas that were not exposed to the sun revert to white.
Works well on natural fibres, particularly cotton and silk and is permanent if applied properly.
Often used with leaves or plants, but you can use almost anything to block the sunlight from fabric/paper.
Please note that this is brown version of the Ferric Ammonium Citrate, not the green. It works just the same, but needs a slightly longer exposure time.
The booklet goes through the process step by step, with videos accompanying each stage. The videos cover:
- Examples
- How to mix the chemicals
- Preparing the surfaces
- Processing the results
- How to use masks
- Layering
- Using Digital Negatives
- Wet cyanotype
- Changing the colour from blue
The videos will give you confidence to experiment and try out different ideas to make your own unique cyanotype prints. Your prints can then be used in textile art, quilts or be made into books etc.
